In "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" What Group Represents The Lotus Eaters From The Odyssey?

I think the Coen Brothers intended all the people being baptized in the river to be the Lotus Eaters. (This is the scene set to "Down to the River to Pray," sung by Alison Krauss and others.) This is mentioned in the CD booklet.
