Lil Wayne is the stage name for American rapper born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr, who was born 27th September 1982. Lil Wayne has has a turbulent lifestyle coupled with showbiz and time in jail in New York after being convicted of possessing a criminal weapon in 2007. He was convicted in 2010 and served an eight-month sentence. He began his rapping career from the tender age of nine, when he joined Cash Money Records as the youngest member of the label.
He was half of the duo The B.G’z with B.G short for "Baby Gangsta”, born Christopher Dorsey. In 1997, when he was just 15, Lil Wayne joined the group Hot Boys with rappers Juvenile, B.G, and Young Turk. The group’s debut album, Get It How U Live! Was released that year but it was their second studio album, Guerilla Warfare, released two years later in 1999 that earned Lil Wayne most of his success and recognition.
He released his platinum selling debut solo album, The Block Is Hot in the same year, which sold over one million copies in the U.S. The artist’s next two albums reached Gold status and his fourth offering, Tha Carter, was the beginning of a three album-series rise to fame with Tha Carter II, leading on to his most successful album and third in the series, Tha Carter III, which sold one million copies in the U.S. In its first week of release.
The album included his number one single, Lollipop, and won the Grammy award for Best Rap Album. While in prison, Lil Wayne released another album called I Am Not A Human Being in September 2010, and his ninth studio album, the first since being released from prison, is due out 21st June 2011, aptly titled Tha Carter IV.
