He didn't. He got a skin desease called vitilgo. It kills the pigment in your skin, turning it effectively white.

The singer always claimed that his increasingly pale appearance was the result of Vitali, a chronic condition that causes patches of skin to lose pigment.    However, Quincy – who also worked with Michael on Off The Wall and Bad – dismisses this explanation as “bulls**t”.    He says in a candid new interview: "I don't believe in any of that bulls**t, no. No. Never.    "I've been around junkies and stuff all my life. I've heard every excuse. It's like smokers - 'I only smoke when I drink' and all that stuff. But it's bulls**t.    "You're justifying something that's destructive to your existence. But when somebody's hell-bent on it, you can't stop 'em.    "What his face turned into is ridiculous. Chemical peels and all of it. And I don't understand it. But he obviously didn't want to be black. You see his kids?"      Quincy (second left) in the studio with Michael (far right), Smokey Robinson (far left) and Lionel Richie (second right) while recording charity single 'We Are The World'  in 1985    Quincy suggests Michael was a hypochondriac, but is unable to explain why his friend had such a problem with the way he looked.    "He'd come up with, 'Man, I promise you I have this disease,' and so forth, and 'I have a blister on my lungs,' and all that kind of bulls**t," he tells Details.    "It's hard, because Michael's a Virgo, man - he's very set in his ways. You can't talk him out of it.    "I'm just a musician and a record producer. I'm not a psychiatrist. I don't understand all that stuff. We all got problems."    Black to white: Michael's changing appearance    After learning of his friend's death, Quincy praised Michael for his "talent, grace, professionalism and dedication" in an emotional tribute.    RIP Michael Jackson 1958 - 2009    1 of 50  Michael Joseph Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana on August 29, 1958. He was the seventh child of nine children to Joseph and Katherine Jackson and was born into a typical working class family. The city of Gary is 25 miles from downtown Chicago and is famous for its massive steel industry. It took its name from the chairman of U.S. Steel, Elbert H Gary, and is nicknamed 'City of Century' – we're hoping for ironic reasons. (Image: WEN.com)    2 of 50  Michael showed a prodigious talent for music from a very early age, often singing in front of his classmates at school. In 1964, aged six, he joined the group his older brothers formed called The Jackson Brothers and performed backing vocals and congas. By 1966 the family collective had renamed themselves The Jackson 5 and Michael and Jermaine had assumed vocal duties. They toured the Midwest extensively, even playing in adult strip joints. (Image: WEN.com) As a showcase for his talent, Michael released four solo albums with the Motown imprint beginning with his debut 'Got To Be There' (which spawned the track of the same name) in 1972 and ending with 'Forever Michael' in 1975 when the star was 16. Released at a time when The Jackson 5 were still active, although the solo albums didn't achieve anywhere near the greatness or sales figures his later records did, they marked him out as a future star.

Though many people think he bleached his skin, Michael Jackson actually had a fairly rare disorder that made the pigments in his skin quit producing melanin (I don't think I spelled that right). Melanin is a chemical in your skin that dictates how dark your skin is, it just depends on the amount ( the more melanin the darker).

The only concern we should have right now is how his family is doing! We should be praying for them, he is resting in peace. What happened to his skin is no longer an issue, some of you people are so! Insensitive to the fact that the man has passed away and a family is now in mourning. May God Have Mercy On All Of You! May the Jackson Family be comforted by the Gods Spirit in thier
hour of bereavement. Pray for the children.

No, Michael Jackson had vitiligo, a disease where the skin loses pigmentation, so he had white patches on his skin all over his body. At some point it got bad enough so he had surgery to de-pigment his skin, making him all white. He was not really sick from this disease, it was just unsightly.

His 'paid' doctors claimed he had vitiligo a skin condition that effects people of all races and skin colours. I do not believe this, as the typical symptoms of vitiligo are sporadic skin blotches, it is not uniform, His skin (face and other parts on show) miraculously seem a constant uniform pale colour. I believe he has had a specialist bleach his skin over a period of time during his plastic surgery years to alter his nose to a typical Roman look. He seemed desperate to get rid of his negroid features, shame on him. I hear he now has skin cancer which is probably a result of the skin bleaching.

He was a mainstream pop icon. No one would buy anything with his face on it if he was two different colors, you don't sell records like that no matter how good you sing. I honestly do not believe though that he bleached his skin for any other reason than to even it out.

I agree, that disease looks NOTHING like Michael Jackson's skin, it's very unlikely that this is the only cause.

As Jacko himself said, "It don't matter if you're black or white". Why should it matter to us what colour he was? He was a person, and an amazing person also, and we should remember him for being one of the world's most talented people, not for having skin that some people don't like. He claimed to have had a skin condition, vitiligo, which causes patches of skin to lose their colour. He did not want to have multicolour skin, so he bleached the rest of it. Big deal. Now lets just remember him for who he was on the inside, and show that we are not so shallow as to only care about his physical appearance.

Because it mattered to HIM. And who he was on the inside, was a damaged child that never got to grow up (and all this in the service of making money/showbiz). That's who he was on the inside, as far as I can tell (and I have experience in being in the spotlight as a child on a far smaller scale and it doesn't end well).

He had a skin condition that started to kill off his skin pigment thus turning him white. So he just bleached his skin to get it over with.

Michael Jackson did not Bleach his skin. He had a skin disease called beautiligo. A part of your body goes white due to diabetes and many other symptoms. He will look ugly that is why he had a skin transplant.

He did not bleach his skin, he had a skin disease named Vitiligo that destroys skin cells, it causes pigmentation of the skin, he wore makeup on his body to even out his skin, he did not bleach his skin, it is irrelevant!

He did it because of his illness. He didnt do to just randomly become white. He wanted his skin to be even. He is an amazing guy and everything about him being a child molester and trying to drop his child off a building is not true. He was only trying to show the world is beautiful son.

Michael J was Killed... It was not due to natural causes or an over dose that he took on his own accord. Its all a conspiracy which in time will be brought out. They were not prepared to let him clear his debt by doing the 50 concerts...something is just not right with this celebrity death. He looked happy to be rehearsing for the concerts and energetic...someone has been paid to cause his death and to make up rumours of his frail last days. His last hours were rehearsing how could he be ill or frail. He was Murdered.

He had a skin disorder that he did probably have to bleach some of his skin to even it out. I have a friend who has that has vitiligo. People who have it are very sensitive about how people look at them. I can understand him trying to even out his skin. Most of what mj did was apply body makeup....for those who think it's a joke, you would understand if it were happening to you or someone close to you.

Michael Jackson did not bleach himself he had a skin condition called Vitiligo or supposedly what people say he could've been insecure too. Because Michael's dad Joe Jackson was so mean to him it could've caused to not to feel normal about him self therefore he bleached himself. Its mostly likely going to be Vitiligo because in pictures there are splotches of different color skin on him.

First off, there is no such thing as dying skin. Michael didn't want his skin colour to change. He had a skin disorder called vitiligo which destroys the pigmentation in the skin. Michael's got really bad and spread all over his body. He couldn't control it. There is a picture of Michael in 1987ish and 1987 was the start of the bad era and in bad, michael's skin was a lot lighter. In this picture, it shows michael with the light part of his skin showing although he tried to cover it with makeup. Why we he cover up the light parts of his skin if he "wanted to be white"?

He came to court in his pajamas and made funn faces he was a true entertainer. He knew he didnt do anything wrong and he showed it throughout court and in the public eye. For those of you who complain about his skin being pale, He had a skin
disorder, called Vitiligo. That skin disorder causes the
person to loose pigmentation of the skin, and forces the person to
either use makeup to match the rest of the skin, put darker makeup on
top, or not cover it at all. It can range from one place, to all over
your body. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewq4pG_ImHg

BOTH. He had Vitiligo and lupus and over time made most of his body white. He did his best to hide it in its earlier stages. He wore the sequined glove to hide the white patches. Michael Jackson was very vain and self conscious. Eventually the white was larger than the black and he had the rest depigmented to he would look more even. There are some pictures where you can see his white spots. www.youtube.com

Michael jackson suffered from a skin disease called vertigo and it caused him pigmentation problems, he had like white patches all over his skin, so in order to conceal those patches, he had to bleach his skin. It is really sad that he died at 50. He was like legendary.

Michael Jackson was not a strong minded person he let peoples opinions rule his life, so yes he bleached himself, but peoples cruel comments lead him to it. Does anyone realize he had a problem I don't know if he was slow or just mentally ill but all the bleaching, surgeries, acting oddly, and living in his own fantasy world, were all signs that there was a problem.

Michael Jackson had vitiligo. This changes lightens the skin pigmentation. Some have it in small places, others had it all over their body. Michael Jackson had it all over his body, but he had makeup or something to even out the color.
