Oprah Winfrey philanthropic work in South Africa dates back these last few years but it has been quiet substantial for a single individual. The most renowned and praised initiative was the setting up of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls investing 40 million dollars of her own money and time. The academy is located near the city of Johannesburg in South Africa and it opened up in the January of the year 2007. Noble Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela praised Winfrey for her charity and benevolence. The only reason some criticized the school was because it even included a yoga centre and a beauty centre.
Earlier in the year 2004 Oprah Winfrey had a special episode called Oprah's Christmas Kindness aired which focused on the plight of children suffering from AIDS in South Africa. The show received $7 million in donations worldwide to help with the cause.
