Normally, the process of auditioning to become a singer and actress will take place as an entrance examination into a drama school, such as Juilliard or RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts). Such schools usually audition new pupils in September each year, and each have their own application requirements. Contact the schools you wish to audition for personally in the first instance. While raw talent as a singer or actress will always be appreciated by drama schools, having some previous experience before applying to them is often equally useful, at Juilliard, for instance, the audition stage is only one part of a three-stage application process; the others are a written application and provision of supporting documents or materials.
Experience in the real world means having auditioned for either amateur or professional roles or appearances in other settings, local theatre or local venues for instance, at each of which, you will be required to audition before being booked or accepted.
Alternatively, more and more acceptable at least in a commercial market are the enormous televised audition shows, American Idol, America’s/Britain’s Got Talent, The X Factor etc. Such shows hold regular local auditions nationwide, which will be locally advertised. However, success via this route is highly unlikely, and even when achieved has been shown to be relatively fleeting in most cases. Furthermore, transforming success on these shows into a lasting acting career has proven beyond the reach of most, if not all, contestants.
