The show is commended for its straightforward portrayal of the 9/11 terror attacks. The show's third season which occur after the 9/11 attacks opened in October 15, 2001 with the "In Their Own Words" episode. The episode featured interviews with real life NYPD and FDNY members who actively participate in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. The said episode won a Peabody Award. Aside from this, some of its cast members were nominated for ALMA Awards, NAACP Image Awards. The show itself was a nominated in the Primetime Emmy Awards and won the two awards in 2000 for Outstanding Sound Editing for a series and Outstanding Stunt Coordination.
The show's final episode was entitled "Goodbye to Camelot" where the Third Watch team was split up after the 55th Precinct and Fire Station was burned down due to a grenade attack. The show was listed among the TV shows which were canceled early.
