Blues officially developed in about 1900 (around there,) but actually started a while back with slaves. They would sing sad songs that were about losing family, hardships of being a slave and sadness of separation.
Blues started as a derivative of the music of African Americans in the Mississippi Delta and other places in the southern parts of the US, such as New Orleans, Memphis, St. Louis and other major cities where African American culture grew.
During the pre and post World War II periods there was a great migration of African Americans from the south to some of the northern industrial cities, such as Chicago and New York. Rural southern African Americans took their music with them. As their lives changed the themes of the music changed.
