Grunge was not invented by anybody in particular, instead it was a term used to describe the sound of alternative rock bands hailing from Seattle from the mid to late 1980s to the middle of the 1990s. Mark Arm (the vocalist of early grunge band Green River) was credited with having first coined the term.

Grunge - which is a sub-genre of alternative rock - was born out of a fusion of punk, heavy metal, indie rock and hardcore.

The songs are usually characterized by introverted lyrics, heavy guitar distortion, contrasting dynamics and themes of alienation, apathy and depression.

Grunge became huge in the early 1990s with the release of Nirvana's "Nevermind" and Pearl Jam's "Ten". Both albums are two of the best alternative rock albums of all time.

Soundgarden were the first gunge band to sign to a major record label. Alice in Chains and Screaming Trees followed them in the late 80s, but none of these bands hit the big time with their initial releases.

Then came Nirvana, who signed a major record deal in 1990. In September 1991, the band released its album "Nevermind" - which was at best hoped to be a minor success. However, with the release of the album's lead single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit", Nirvana went global and "Nevermind" began selling 400,000 copies a week.

By 1992, "Nevermind" had replaced Michael Jackson at the top of the charts, ushering in the grunge movement.

Wow.. You guys got it all wrong.. 1984 is when Soundgarden and Green River  formed.. Soundgarden released their major label debut in 1989 "Louder Than Love" being the first to break from Seattle. Bleach was on sub pop which at the time was still small.. And by the SG's first EP Screaming Life was released by sub pop.

Soul Asylum invented grunge.  They evolved from an early punk band and in the process invented grunge.  They were doing it long before it became popular.Probably around 85.

Oops! 84 was the first album from them with grunge songs. Sort of a mix between punk n grunge. Guess it started with Neil Young n Soul Asylum perfected it. Haha Seattle. It started in Canada? Moved to Minnesota? Then to Seattle. Or maybe Austrailia had it first? All I know is Soul Asylum should be mentiond because they were innovative. Live shows-spectacular. Check it out on You Tube!

Grunge as a form of music, was an alternative rock genre that had its roots in punk, heavy metal, and indie rock. The Seattle bands are credited with the creation of the grunge genre, although it is a label most of them detest, and was more a creation of the press. Kurt Cobain for example preferred to describe his music as punk. With most of the bands hailing from Seattle the new sound also came to be called the Seattle sound. Grunge came to the forefront and became mainstream in the early 1990s.

Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, Screaming Trees, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney and Pearl Jam were some of the biggest grunge bands and music aside something else they all shared in common was that they hailed from Seattle.

The grunge sound evolved from the punk rock scene, and was characterized by the 'dirty' guitar sound, strong riffs, and heavy drumming. Their music was as much a product of the apalling social conditions in which many of them grew up, and this was clearly reflected in their angst-ridden lyrics.
