There was not one inventor of pop music. Instead the genre has its roots in the 1950s rock n roll movement. The genre is extremely broad and pop artists often combine many different types of music into their songs.
Pop music is defined as any music that places consumerism above art, as its main goal is to shift units rather than to provoke thought.
"(pop music) Doesn't come from any particular place or mark off any particular taste... It is not driven by any significant ambition except profit and commercial reward. It is provided from on high rather than being made from below... Pop is not a do-it-yourself music but is professionally produced and packaged." Simon Frith.

Pop songs are generally short to medium length (usually around three minutes); have basic structures (such as the Verse-Chorus structure), and are complemented by catchy melodies and repetitive choruses.
Origins of the term, "pop music".
Initially the term was defined as "to have widespread appeal", but since rock n roll of the 1950s it has also been used to describe non-classical music in the form of songs performed by popular artists.
The term has also been used in opposition to rock music. Rock music at the time aspired to authenticity and the development of the boundaries of popular music. Pop music in contrast was commercial, radio-friendly and accessible. Nowadays pop music defines any music that treats profit as more important than art.
