Black Sabbath have been one of the most influential bands ever, only second to the Beatles, in terms of the impact of their music and lifestyle on popular culture, and music in general. Without Sabbath there never would be heavy metal. Although they were initially not taken seriously, and did not enjoy huge commercial success in their early days, their innovative brand of rock music, with heavy guitar riffs, pounding drums, complex bass lines, and dark and socially relevant lyrics, ushered in a whole new era of rock music, and the birth of heavy metal.
Black Sabbath which was formed in 1968, remains as popular today, if not more than during their early years. The biggest heavy metal bands of the 1980s and 1990s, like Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Slayer, Guns n Roses, and even grunge bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden, have all been influenced by Black Sabbath, a fact they are all quite vocal about. Artists from the new millennium also continue to be influenced by Sabbath.
There have been numerous tributes to Black Sabbath, and tribute album releases too, the most well known being the 'Nativity in Black 1: A Tribute to Black Sabbath' and 'Nativity in Black II: A Tribute to Black Sabbath'. The two albums featured a variety of artists from Biohazard to Megadeth and Ugly Kid Joe, and Godsmack, System of a Down, and even Busta Rhymes.
