The name of the island-people from the Popeye cartoons were the Goons. One of the Goons, Alice, later became a friend to Popeye and Olive Oyl.

The Goons, Alice included, were originally unwilling slaves of the Sea Hag, but Popeye helped liberate the Goons after the Sea Hag had captured his friend Wimpy. The Goons live on Goon Island but Alice, who helped Popeye defeat the Sea Hag, left to live with Olive Oyl and help her care for Swee'pea.

The Goons First Appeared in Popeye in 1933

The Popeye comic strip had been running for four years when December 1933 saw the debut of the Goons in a strip called 'Plunder Island', this being the location of the Sea Hag's secret lair. Alice the Goon also appeared in later animated Popeye features such as The Popeye and Olive Comedy Show from 1981 to 1983.

Popeye meets the Goons in this 1938 animated feature, 'Goonland'.
