The legendary actor James Dean (1931-1955) best remembered for his role in the film Rebel without a Cause (1955) which achieved iconic status among the youth then, died in a car accident when he was at the height of his career.

Dean was famous for his portrayals of the typical angst ridden teenager who feels lost in the world; the film Rebel Without a Cause depicts the position of the youth in contemporary American society. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in the film Giant (1956) in which he starred along with Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson.

During his acting career Dean developed a liking for car racing and performed credibly in the races that he participated; he was placed second in the Palm Springs Road Races and came third in the Bakersfield races in 1955.

Dean met with an accident near Cholame, California on September 30, 1955 while driving his newly acquired car a Porsche 550 Spyder; the accident took place when Dean's car collided head on with a car coming from the opposite direction. Dean's mechanic Rolf Wuetherich who was traveling along with him and Donald Turnupseed were injured in the crash however Dean died due to the impact immediately after.
