Yes, there is a movie like kamasutra in Bollywood. It is called 'Kama Sutra, A Tale of Love'. It was directed by Mira Nair and written by Mira Nair and Helena Kriel, with a further writing credit being given to Wajida Tabassum for the 'Hand Me Downs' story.

  • Release date and stars
The 117 minute long movie was released in 1996 and stars Sarita Choudhury, Indira Varma, Ramon Tikaram, Ranjit Chowdhry, Naveen Andrews, Rekha and Arundhati Rao.

  • Story line
This is the story of two girls, Tara and Maya, who are inseparable friends in 16th century India. They have the same habits, hobbies and tastes, although Tara is a princess and Maya is her servant. They remain close friends into adulthood, when Tara marries a prince, Raj Singh, a sole heir who shortly after the marriage succeeds to the throne.

Raj soon gets bored with Tara and seeks pleasures elsewhere, finding it in Maya. The rest of the movie revolves around the events that follow when Tara finds out, and the extend of her measures to keep her marriage.

  • Age Ratings
Some of the more erotic scenes had to be cut out to gain the movie an MPAA R rating for US cinemas, but it was left uncut for home release. In India, where it was actually filmed, gaining access to cinemas meant even more extensive trimming. Certification in various countries is as follows:

Australia, cable rating MA; Ratings in Canada are Quebec, 16+, with Manitoba and Ontario, R and Nova Scotia, 18; Chile, surprisingly 14; France, a U; Germany has a 16 and Hong Kong rates it III. Ironically, the movie is banned in India. Mexico is a C, Portugal has an M/16 and in Singapore it is R(A). In South Korea, Spain and the UK it is an 18.
