The role of Gandalf was played by Sir Ian Mckellen. He was born on May 25th 1939, in Lancashire in England.
At the age of 18, he won a scholarship to St. Catherine's College and his West End debut came in 1964. In 1969, he was made famous for his role in Edward II.

His title role in Richard III in 1995 earned him the European Film Award for best actor, and he was nominated for BAFTA and Golden Globe Awards.

For his role as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, he received a Best Supporting Actors award from the Screen Actors Guild.

In 2005, he appeared in the UK soap opera, Coronation Street, as Mel Hutchwright, a character who tricked residents into believing he was an author.

His other films include the X-men films, The Da Vinci Code, Flushed Away (voice) and Doogal (voice).
