Well, I got two versions, one is that they played in a bar in Jacksonville Fla. On Hwy. 38, reportedly their first gig in 1979, under the name Sunshine state band. But the next bit that I found was that the police burst into the garage where they were rehearsing, with guns drawn, and the guns were .38 specials. I don't know which to believe, but the latter sounds more like the real thing.

Well, this is how it went down.
Donnie got the idea to name the band 38 special from a song his brother Ronnie did called "Saturday night Special". In the lyrics, Ronnie sang about a man slipping into your house and filling you full of 38 holes.
That's my story and I'm stickin to it.
