Probably because it's a war cry, and gets their adrenalin moving. I wouldn't call it "yapping like dogs." Don't make fun of things you don't understand.

G'day Nomad,

Thank you for your questions.

Many armies have had battle cries. However, I suspect that it is another movie cliche so that the soldiers would know and defend the fort. The Indians weren't as incompetent as portrayed in films and TV.

They are not dogs they are coyotes they waited till dark and raided the garbage dump
near the fort. The Indians snuck in behind the coyotes and barked out their own code of
attack such as 2 barks and 1 howl which meant attack from south or 2 howls +1 bark=north
you get  the idea. The soldiers never could break this code. It was written by the Minnesota
Sioux Indians back in the 1860's. Over 120 brave Sioux from the Prairie Island Tribe near
Red Wing MN spent the whole summer working on it and when it was done they called it
the 128 brave encryption. It sat dormant for many years and about 30 years ago Bill Gates
got hold of it stole it from the Indians, changed the name to 128 bit encryption so now it is
used on the Internet for making secure transactions. The Indians are doing fine the
Prairie Island Resort and Casino that they own pays them 1 million each per year.
