The Color and the Shape was the second Foo Fighters album and was released in 1997, making the New Musical Express Top 50 albums for that year.

Although pleased with the eventual results, Dave Grohl has since admitted recording The Colour and The Space was a difficult process. The drummer for the original recording session for the album in mid-1996 was former Sunny Day Real Estate member William Goldsmith, who had played for the Foo Fighters during their tour of earlier that year. The sessions went badly for the group and Goldsmith in particular; despite having the drummer record multiple takes for each song, Grohl could not find what he'd envisaged for the tracks in in Goldsmith's performances. Drastic action was needed.

Although he retained Goldmith's drum track for the song 'Doll,' Grohl later re-recorded all of the other drumming for The Color and the Shape himself in the band's next recording session in early 1997 - a session he kept secret from Goldsmith who, on learning his work had been discarded and redone, left the Foo Fighters to rejoin Sunny Day Real Estate.
