Wow Virginia, I've never heard anyone sing that song other than Roy. KD did an awesome job.

Dear Jaimie,

I just notice that Didge has mentioned Londonderry Air, and I was thinking of that one also...when I think of sadness I go to the traditional ballads.

Here is PLAISIR D' AMOUR, the incredibly sweet-voice Joan Baez in 1966:

Londonderry Air  has to be right up there, but there have been many others.

No list of sad songs would be complete without Pore Judd is Daid from Oklahoma!  and who could not be moved by Johnny Ray's dirge, The Little White Cloud that Cried.

Oh, Dozy...for the first time I am considering the possibility Johnnie Ray's song might not be taken seriously...I listened when it came out in the 1950's! He had such a wonderful voice; considered by some to be the link between Sinatra and Elvis...

Few pop songs should ever be taken seriously, Virginia, but really they're about entertainment -- and if they manage to do that they;ve been successful.

I never thought about the link from Sinatra (or any of gthe other popular vocalists from the pre-rock n roll era) and Elvis, but JR was certainly part of that transition.

Well, it's been quite a lovely time going into some of these old classics...JR had not thought of him in decades, prolly!

So, I literally HATE this song. I think it's because it is so sad, and I heard it played over and over as a child.

I've always thought "We'll Sing in the Sunshine"  (Gale Garnett) was, at its heart, a sad song.
