Dear Didge,

For me, no doubt whatsoever...I will take the books! Movies just never capture the nuances like books do. One movie I thought might be an exception, because it was so good, was REMAINS OF THE DAY... Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins.

But then several years later I read Kazuo Ishiguro's novel...omg...it was magnificent, left the movie in the dust.

* * *

One REAL exception might be Howard Hawks' TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT, because I read he made that movie on a bet...that he could take a really bad short story and make a great movie from it! (And of course the rest is history...)

Hi DS. I've often thought of that but the trouble is, I only remember AFTER it's been deleted. As Rooster explained a couple of weeks ago it's so easy to hit the wrong key on a mod's desktop and I've no problem with that. Apparently that didn't happen this time. And I still have no problem: these things happen.

And Virginia: I'm surprised. I didn't expect many answers on this one. Seems so many people have something to say. It's great. :0

Both.

Books because I discovered them a 15 and you can hold them easier. Corny I know 😄

Movies, you can watch a movie over and over, comprehending the full scope and the meaning of the movie. You discover hidden meanings, phases and concepts.

I'm into both but i can announce the number of the movies i have watched are a lot more than the books i have red.

Movies; The environment is easier to catch. As i understood,  my habit and feelings at this title aren't understandable to many. When i watch the movie, i have this ability to get drown into the story, the physical interception that i can observe give me this ability to sink into the story and live the moment. Therefore, movies are "never" just "movies" for me. In my world, movies are visions of reality. (except two factors 1.Fiction/fantasy genres 2.Movie making details that are there to make the action more attractive). So movies gives me this ability to live different moments, observe difference perspectives and feel different emotions. Which gains my outlook, experience and abilities. And this has been proved to some and some secretly stayed there.

Books; the most type of books i love to read is personal opinion archives. The writer's perspectives and experiences with their lives or researches and ideologies. (For instance, a book written by Abraham Lincoln) but novels and stories ? Not much until it be horror. And the silence about sitting and reading a book drive me crazy and my eyes get tired pretty soon. It gives me a less connection with books.

In reality I love books, for all the right reasons. However like a lot of things in my life that I enjoy I prefer to read when I know I will not be interrupted or distracted. For movies I prefer those not based on books. Those based on books rarely if ever have been enjoyable. There have been exceptions such as Harry Potter series. But, as an adult,  I would stay up all night finishing a Harry Potter Book.

Harry Potter is one of my omissions that I plan to correct. The bits I've gleaned seem pretty good. I've also missed out on Terry Pratchett's Discworld and plan to read at least some of those over the next couple of years.

One movie that did surprise me pleasantly was Lord of the Rings. Well, three movies, really. There were lots of things in the book that didn't make it to the screen (like Tom Bombadil and parts of the homecoming) but I thought Peter Jackson and his crew did an excellent job getting such a story to the screen.

Books. Books have been my safe, happy escape since I could read. I once told my cousin that I would not see certain movies if I had read the book because I didn't want to see another person's interpretation of said book. Words are not just words to me, when I read its an actual movie in my head. I can live it, breathe it, taste it. The world around me stops when I read. During certain times in my life a book has entertained, uplifted, educated, inspired and sated my natural curiosity. A mere movie has never been able to compare.

I've skipped quite a few movies because they didn't come up to the book. The Hunt for Red October was one of them. Clancy did a great job with his characterisation but the characters in the movie were mere shadows -- almost cardboard replicas on those in the book. I bailed out in less than half an hour.

Books. Too often movies cut out the little things that make a story...more Things that people can connect with. Plus the characters are often described one way and you get this picture in your head and then they cast someone who is totally inappropriate. Take Interview With a Vampire. I love that book and when they cast Tom Cruise as Lestat it just ruined it for me.

I hadn't seen Interview but the latest casting mishap was casting Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher last year. I'm not sure which of the Reacher stories was made into a film but the guy is 6' 5" tall has a no nonsense personality. A runt like Cruise strutting and posturing about the screen just doesn't cut it.

I must admit I prefer books. Though I will watch an old musical almost any time it is on TV. (The music and dancing just doesn't seem the same in a book :) )

Books.  They go into so much depth that movies don't have enough time to cover.  You can go inside the characters' minds in books, whether it be written in first or third person, whereas you can't in movies.  You can let your imagination run wild when reading a book.  There's no boundaries on what the characters and setting looks and sounds like except for what is put there by the author.  You have to use your mind more when reading a book, and it's more intimate than watching a movie- you can feel like you are living the story in a book, but it's harder to in a movie.  Books feel so much better to hold.  The paper when you flip through the book makes the most amazing sound.

I gotta confess though that your final sentence has left me feeling a bit guilty. Last week i bought my first eBook reader. :(

A couple of years ago I saw a large young woman in a low cut dress. She had nice skin and, in spite of her size, looked attractive. But across here breasts she had a musical staff with treble clef and a few bars of crotchets and quavers. I could help wondering if she put on weight (the inflation you mentioned) if her tattoo would expand into a full blown symphony.

Prefer books by far, but still enjoy a good movie.  In fact I will often catch myself reading a passage while actually "seeing" it as a movie scene. And sometimes, while viewing a movie based on a book I enjoyed I can be really jarred by what I would consider miscasting, meaning the actor/actress is not at all what I had envisioned.  It can actually ruin the entire movie experience for me.

Amen, Brother Baldwin. I hear what you say. I've had a few audio books from the library recently and one of them was from the BBC's Dalziel and Pascoe. It was read by the man who plays Pascoe in the series and, as you said, I could almost see it as he read the story.

I must try to make a desicion. But I will say this.

Movies, have arisen in the recent century. They are still new-ish, in human technology.

Books, and written word, can pass on for years and teach people new and old things.

My point : The written word has been around for centuries. I see no point for it to stop now.

There are plenty of both out there to enjoy. The trouble with collecting books (as I should know) is that amount of space they need. I've got the things everywhere. I've just bought an eReader so future books won't be a problem. And it's gotta be good that I'll be able to dust all my new books in a couple of seconds. :)

I picked up reading again about two months ago and have flown through several books already. My vote goes to books as the plots and characters are far more defined than those of a movie ever could be.

Welcome to the majority, Corey. Books allow your imagination to create the characters and situations. When you see somebody else's interpretation on screen it can sometimes bge a let down.

Books. Film will never trump the endless bounds of the human imagination when reading a book. I've lost hours in books, it's almost like getting sucked into another dimension. When I'm reading I am not aware that I have arms, legs, or even a head.

Sadly I have developed muscle problems with my eyes, convergence syndrome,  which means my eye muscles sometimes have trouble pulling together to form one image, reading is difficult with double vision. I haven't read a book in four years :(

Hi
Didge! I know it’s not really right, but you just cannot compare the thrills
that we get from a 3D movie with a book? I personally cannot do this to be
frank! I love movies all the way and even though there is much more to learn
from the pages of a good novel or whatever, they no longer attract me at this
age!

Hi Nealous. I've been waiting for the movie lovers to chime in. So far you're outnumbered. I've only seen one 3D movie (one of the Narnia movies) so I'm not really any judge of them. I can see why they'd be very popular, though.

I'm waiting for hologram movies. Now that'd be something. Princess Leaia prancing about on my living room carpet would be a real turn on.
