He doesn't always play the bad guy. Check out the original Stargate movie. He plays the ridiculed scientist who puts all the peices together to get the Stargate working and connected to Abidos. Check it out. That was a really good movie.
Actors get typecast all the time. They try to avoid it but it happens. They play a certain character type so well thats all anyine wants to hire them for. Typecasting has ruined some careers and made others. Spader plays slimy and underhanded oddball creeps really well
