Beyonce became famous as one of the members of the group, Destiny's Child.
She was born in Houston, Texas in 1981, to a professional record manager and a costume designer. She enrolled in ballet and jazz classes at St. Mary's Elementary School, Texas and soon realized that her major talent was singing. She won a talent competition at the age of 7, and joined the Parker Elementary School in 1990, aged 8. At this time, she also attended an audition for an all-girl group. She won a part and she lined up alongside Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Robertson, and others in the group Girl's Tyme.
The group was cut back to include Beyonce, Rowland and Robertson, together with a new member LeToya Luckett, and they began to support R&B girl groups with a degree of success. Beyonce's father was the manager of the group, and her mother provided the costumes for their stage shows.
They received a record contract with Columbia Records in 1996, having changed their name to Destiny's Child. Luckett and Robertson left the group and 2 new members, Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin joined, and then the fame arrived.
The group had huge international success releasing 4 acclaimed albums before splitting to pursue solo careers in 2004. Since then Beyonce Knowles has achieved even more success as a solo artist, and has also appeared in a number of hit motion pictures, including Austin Powers in Goldmember, Cadillac Records, and the remake of The Pink Panther.
She has recently headlined at the Glastonbury Festival in Great Britain, and makes regular appearances in music award shows and television chat shows.
