American Apparel was founded by a Canadian called Dov Charney in 1989. The company took on the name "American Apparel” whilst Dov Charney was in his freshman year at university and in 1997 the company moved from South Carolina to Los Angeles. Dov Charney began to sub-contract sewing with Sam Lim and then months later they became partners.
American Apparel moved into its current 800,000-square-foot factory in Los Angeles in the year 2000, where it grew as a wholesale business selling blank T-shirts to screen printers, other companies and fashion brands. The company was ranked 308th out of the 500 fastest selling businesses in the United States’ 2005’s Inc.’s list.
As well as the factory, the company also operates its own fabric dye house, garment dye house and knitting facility, which are all based in Los Angeles. American Apparel claim to have the highest paid apparel workers in the world, paying its workers an average of over twelve dollars an hour compared to China’s garment workers who earn a mere 40 cents an hour.
Each working team works independently and deals with its own daily production timetable, therefore giving themselves control of their own hourly wages. The company is the largest garment factory in the United states with the amount of people employed reaching 10,000 and the number of retail locations being 200 in 18 countries as of 2008.
Each year the company donates thousands of garments to local charities as part of its commitment to the community.
