Hugh Hefner was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 9, 1926. Hefner was raised in an orthodox Methodist home that was typically repressive with no display of affection of any kind. He studied at the Sayre Elementary School, after which he went to the Steinmetz High School. The Second World War was drawing to a close at the time, and during those closing months he served in the US Army.
After he returned from his service, he studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, majoring in psychology. Despite the fact that he completed his graduation in less than three years, within that period he found the time to edit Shaft, and sell cartoons to magazines. His first employment for a salary was with a firm, involved in the production and printing of cardboard cartons.
