For just one movie for all time... Shawshank Redemption I suppose. Thinking about movies this probably offers the most diverseness available. There's drama, suspense, comedy, horror, some history in a way. The characters are developed nicely, back stories etc. And you generally get a good idea of everyone on screen - even the background personalities who don't speak a lot in the movie.

According to me the best movie (of recent times at least) is Inception.
Any movie which has either Johnny Depp or Tom Cruise starring in it is good.
