A guy in South Africa called Steve Jooste wrote and performed a song titled "Hello, Halley" in 1986, just after the sighting. It was played twice, back to back, on a national radio breakfast show. Listeners called in, wanting to know where to get the recording but no local music companies were interested despite the response.
You can sample the song at
mysite.mweb.co.za in low quality MP3.
Lyrics are as follows:
In all the million years we've lived, we've always been in awe
Of a strange and rare phenomenon of universal law.
Now the starving and the wealthy, the white man and the black -
Seems like everybody knows by now that Halley's Comet's back.
We think its just some frozen gas and guess what's at the core.
Maybe there is nothing to it. Maybe there is more.
Stop the world, I want to move on
Find a dream that I thought was gone
Take a ride on the tail of an astral fantasy.
The reflection in my eye
Is just the twinkle in the sky,
Drifting slowly by -
When you see Halley's Comet, I'll be on it.
Now even if its purpose is in doubt, its done enough.
At a time when things are looking down, its got people looking up.
Even blood-bound enemies put their differences aside
And some wish they could reach right up, grab hold and take a ride.
So forget about the Shuttle and the probes that went to Mars -
Find a comet's paradise somewhere among the stars.
So stop the world, I want to move on
Find a dream that I thought was gone
Take a ride on the tail of an astral fantasy.
The reflection in my eye
Is just the twinkle in the sky,
Drifting slowly by -
When you see Halley's Comet, I'll be on it.
Stop the world, I want to move on,
Find a dream I thought was gone.
