Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone Ritchie was born on August 16, 1958. Now more famously known by her first-name, the performer was born in Bay City, Michigan, the third of six children. Her mother died of breast cancer at the age of 30, the event which the singer has since said had the largest impact on her life.
As was the case with her five siblings, Madonna was required by her father, a Chrysler engineer, to take music lessons although, after some months of piano tuition, she was allowed to switch to ballet. Her ballet teacher mentored her progress as a dancer and, in 1980, Madonna signed a singles deal with Sire. Her first release found success on the Billboard dance chart, with her eponymous debut album reaching number 8 in the American charts. It has since gone five times platinum.
Madonna's career has been characterized by the influences of her early days as a dancer. In particular, her exposure to gay clubs at the hands of her mentor has had a profound effect. Madonna has subsequently become the most successful female performer of all time.
