In the seventies, Bernie Taupin wrote most of the lyrics for Elton John's songs, and the pair still work together on songs now in 2012.

The collaboration between John and Taupin began in 1967, when they were put in contact after answering an advertisement seeking new songwriters. The pair did spend time apart between 1977 and 1979 so that Taupin could work with other artists, but they resumed working together after that. To date, Taupin has written the lyrics for over thirty of Elton John's albums.

To expand just a bit: Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to every Elton John song from the albums EMPTY SKY (1969) through BLUE MOVES (1976). This period covers the period when EJ ruled the pop charts AND was a regular presence in FM radio. "Your Song," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," and "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" were only three of the songs from this time.

Elton and Bernie met each other when each responded to a newspaper advertisement for Liberty Records. EJ failed the audition, but he was given a stack of lyrics that Taupin had dropped off. They began corresponding and writing together. Their first songs released as single were "I've Been Loving You Too Long" and "Lady Samantha."

The album CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY was largely autobiographical.

Beginning with A SINGLE MAN, Elton John began working with other lyricists, including Gary Osborne, Chris Thomas and Tim Rice. However, he still often works with Taupin. In fact, they have released a new CD of original songs called THE CAPTAIN AND THE KID, which is a sequel of sorts to the CAPTAIN FANTASTIC album.

Most of the lyrics for Elton John in the 70's were written by
Bernie Taupin. Later he started writing more of them himself, and his "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from the Lion King was his biggest hit in years.
