Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 in June of 1938. Bud Collyer was the first actor to ever play Superman, but this in a nineteen forties radio drama version, so technically, he doesn't count.
The first actor to play Superman on screen was Kirk Alyn, in several multi-part movie series from nineteen forty eight to nineteen fifty. Since effects were extremely limited, whenever Superman had to fly, his cartoon self would take over.
Next came the television series The Adventures of Superman with George Reeves (no relation to Christopher). Reeve died in suspicious circumstances and is the topic of the film Hollywoodland.
In 1966 a cartoon version made its way on to our televisions, with Bob Hastings doing many of the voices, including the man of steel.
Bob Holliday starred in a stage version, and David Wilson in a TV adaptation of the musical.
Superman, the movie was played by the late Christopher Reeve.
Jeff East plays Clark in Smallville and Dean Cain plays CK in the New Adventures of Superman.
Most recently Brandon Routh, played a much more trouble Kent/Supe in the darker Superman Returns.
