There is no definite list of instruments that can be used in pop music, as the genre utilises such a broad range of instruments.
Pop music itself is more dependent on structure, lyrics, themes and sounds, than on specific instruments, but the most commonly-used are as follows:
  • Guitar
  • Bass
  • Piano
  • Drums
  • Organs
  • Synthesizers
  • Digital audio workshop (DAW)
  • Brass
  • Percussion
  • Vocals
  • Keyboards
  • Strings
  • Autotune.

Digital Music.

The instruments listed above are still seen commonly in pop music, and make up the musical arsenal of most live bands. However, since the heyday of pop music, the genre has become less about the live show and more focused on the image of the pop starlets appearing on the stage.

The advent of audio music software has also had an effect on instrumentation - and nowadays more instruments are manipulated or created using a computer or synthesizer. This can create interesting and orginal effects, but when it is overused it may lead to a bland and sterile sound.
Music software has vastly increased the use of AutoTune within the genre. And its use is now common in modern pop songs. With this technology, pop singers no longer have to be note perfect to sound good, and so this has created an even greater emphasis on image rather than musical ability.
