It's actually quite difficult to attribute the title of Bollywood's most famous star to one single person.
The Bollywood industry is the largest film-producing industry in the world (releasing nearly twice as many films per year then Hollywood!).
Due to the size of the Indian film industry, mega-stars are usually very influential and very wealthy individuals.
Actors and actresses who fit that criteria are listed below.
Bollywood's most famous movie star
If we start with the 1950s (when Bollywood films first made the transition from black and white into color) we find an industry with a tradition of lavish melodramas and musicals. The stars of this era include:
Amitabh Bachchan also gained a reputation in the 1980s and 1990s for his charismatic performances in a range of different films, and was named Superstar of the Millennium by the BBC.
Others, such as Shahrukh Khan, have appeared in two Oscar Nominated Bollywood films
The biggest Bollywood stars to date
Currently, the most famous stars of Bollywood I can think of include actress Aishwarya Rai (a former Miss World), and actors Aamir Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla, and Sunny Deol.
Overall though, if I had to pick the biggest and most influential Bollywood star, in my opinion it would be one of the following:
