Rap was very popular in the 1990s and probably one the most notable and best rap songs of 1997 comes from the rapper Biggie Smalls, who was killed in a drive-by shooting in March of that year.

The song 'Hypnotize' was released after his death and became a huge hit and one of the top rap songs in 1997. It went straight to number one in the Hot Billboard 100 chart in the United States. Another rap song that went straight to number one was the Biggie Smalls single 'Mo money, Mo problems' in which he collaborated with P Diddy and Mase.

'Hypnotize' was probably the most popular rap song of 1997, however, there were a huge number of rap songs that were successful in the 90s era. For example, the famous song 'Gangsta's Paradise' went to the top of the charts in 1995. It was a song released by Coolio and L.V. It remained at the top spot for around three weeks of that year. The song depicts life growing up in the streets.

I'm sure you're aware of the song 'U Can't Touch This' by MC Hammer. It is a famous rap song, but the thing that stands out from it is the fact that it is not a dreary look at life in poverty, but is more of a fun and upbeat dance/rap number. The song went to number one in 1991 on the Billboard Hot R&B and Hip Hop charts. MC Hammer also won two Grammys for Best R&B Song and Best Rap Solo Performance.

'Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang' was written by rapper Dr Dre featuring Snoop Dogg. It reached number two in the charts in 1993, as well as topping the Billboard Hot R&B list.
