She was an unfortunate successful lady who has gone from actress to icon to licensed brand name; only Elvis and James Dean have competed her in market share. I think people liked Marilyn Monroe because at that time she was what men and women desired...men desired her because there boring June Cleaver housewife just wasn't getting the job done as it were...and women desired her because they wanted to be desired like that...this was also a time when sexy wasn't talked about as openly as it is now, and women were to be meek and mild... And when she was none of they above in was a real turn on....and now she is the Iconic symbol of sex and sexy...

She was a size nine, she wasn't a double zero. She ate and that's a true woman.

My mom loves marilyn monroe because of her transformation into something that she wasn't meant to be.

She's a role model just cause of her embrace, the joy she gave. Her aura left people in awe. She never believed compliments - due to all she's been through, which is probably what made her so unhappy.
She was an amazing actress who felt her roles and believed in them.
She's more complex then what she shows to be. She put on her hollywood facade for too long and almost forgot what she would be like otherwise infront of other people. Her growing depression lead her to taking Barbiturates which further complexed her emotions causing a career breakdown which later on apparently caused her death.

And responding to what someone said earlier..
Marilyn was born without her parents. She lived moving to different homes. She made a career and persona out of nothing.

After everything she's been through, what she did for herself and what that lead to it's pretty sad to think of her life as less than inspirational.
Clearly you have no empathy whatsoever or you just haven't done your research (remember don't just look at one website or one comment to make a conclusion about someone who's changed many peoples lives.)

We need more role models like her these days, rather then seeing celebrities falling out of night clubs drunk or drugged up.

I think she was an amazing woman and very strong she went through hard things in her life and over came them she just wanted to be loved and feel wonderfull about herself she did very well :)
