The song is called "Just a Friend” and it is sung and rapped by Biz Markie. The song was written by Biz Markie and Freddie Scott and recorded in 1989.

The actual music video of this song chronicles the singer/rapper’s woman problems. During the video’s climax, the character of Biz Markie comes across his girlfriend who is kissing another guy whom she had referred to previously as ‘just another friend’. The video also has an unforgettable scene with Biz dressed up as Mozart wearing 18th century attire complete with powdered wig playing a piano inside a candle-lit room and singing the chorus-line. The scene was probably inspired by the ‘Rock Me Amadeus’ 1986 hit video, which in turn was inspired by ‘Amadeus’, a 1984 film.

Biz Markie was born Marcel Hall in Harlem on April 8th 1965. By the time he was 14, Biz was dazzling his neighbourhood in Long Island where he was into rhyming and beat boxing. Biz began piecing his own destiny together in the world of hip-hop and rap. Biz delivered humorous and witty rhymes that his music fans loved. You will find Biz performing and spinning to just about all the major celebrities in the USA and abroad. He performs and deejays at shows and parties and has been in movies and on television. Biz is a singer/songwriter, rapper, beat boxer, DJ, actor, producer, comedian, commercial spokesperson and on reality television.

The song has been used by other people in quite a few places. LA Galaxy soccer supporters started singing this song at their home games in 2009. The Boston Red Sox play the song as walkup music for Kevin Youkilis, their first baseman. It is featured in the song ‘Balloon Ideas’ by Ghost Mall. Pharrell of N.E.R.D. And The Neptunes samples a line from the song on the album ‘In My Mind’.’Best Friend’, a song by 50 Cent contains quotes from 'Just a Friend'.

Hi there,

"Just a friend" by Biz Markie

with the (partial) lyrics :

I said, how do you like the show?
She said, I was very amused
I started throwin bass, she started throwin back mid-range
But when I sprung the question, she acted kind of strange

I called her on my dime, picked up, and then I called again
I said, yo, who was that? Oh, hes just a friend
don't gimme that, don't ever gimme that

Oh Baby, you, you got what I need but you say hes just a friend
And you say hes just a friend

Mike Dennis.
