Well, the first step for anyone who wishes to get published nowadays, whether in print form or in music is to get themselves an agent. Because of the high demand of those wishing to make it in the music industry, the majority if not all record labels will not even consider listening to unsolicited material. So you get signed, you need to find yourself a decent agent.
Before you do this however, you need to get yourself out there and heard by people. If you have a decent webcam or video camera with good quality sound, then make some videos of yourself singing or rapping and upload them onto YouTube. Don’t be afraid to promote yourself! You have to be your own biggest fan! Get a Facebook and Twitter account and maybe even a blog on blogspot.com. Post links to your videos on all three of these. Ask your closest friends to listen and encourage their own friends to watch. But don’t just sit back and expect millions of views to roll in overnight. Be patient but help yourself in the mean time.
Once you have made your videos or record your tracks, put them onto CD’s and send them out to agent’s companies with covering letters explaining who you are and what you do. Don’t be disappointed if you don’t get an acceptance straight away, this is extremely unlikely. You need to be persistent and don’t lose confidence. Get in touch with your local radio station to see if they would consider featuring you on an ‘unsigned’ show. A lot of radio stations do this: They invite you into the studio for an interview and play your music.
Don’t give up your day job! Remember, agents have to be paid for and you still have to support yourself whilst you make it in the industry.
